Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
Menstrual Phase
This is when your period starts. Blood comes out because the body is removing the old lining of the womb. It lasts around 3 to 7 days. Hormones are low, and you might feel tired or have cramps. This is the first stage of the cycle.
Follicular Phase
This phase also starts on the first day of your period. The body sends a hormone that tells the ovaries to grow small sacs called follicles. One follicle grows the egg. The womb lining starts getting thicker to prepare for pregnancy.
Ovulation
Around the middle of your cycle, a strong hormone makes the egg come out of the ovary. The egg moves into the fallopian tube and waits to be fertilized. This is the time you can get pregnant most easily. It lasts 1 to 2 days.
Luteal Phase
After ovulation, the empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum. It releases a hormone that keeps the womb ready for pregnancy. If there is no pregnancy, the hormone drops, the lining breaks, and your period starts again.
